The best time to visit Kutaisi — season by season

Kutaisi has a mild, wet climate and a short, hot summer. The season you choose changes the trip more than it changes the city. May and June are the best months. Everything is green after the spring rain, the canyons are full, the mountain roads have opened, and it is warm without being heavy. Prices have not yet reached their August level. July and August are hot and busy. Kutaisi itself can be uncomfortable in the afternoon, but this is when the Black Sea coast is at its best and when Svaneti is fully open — Ushguli included. If you are combining Kutaisi with Batumi or the mountains, this is the trade-off you are making. September and October are the other sweet spot, and arguably better than spring: the heat breaks, the light turns, the grape harvest happens, and the mountain roads are still open into October. Late October brings the rain back. November through March is low season, and honest about it. The city is quiet and cheap, Gelati in winter light is beautiful, and the Tskaltubo sanatoriums are at their most atmospheric. But the mountain roads are the problem: Ushguli is usually unreachable, and the route to Mestia can close in a storm. Plan a winter trip around the city and the low country, not around Svaneti. One constant: the flights. Kutaisi is a low-cost hub, so arrivals at three in the morning happen in every season. Whenever you come, book somewhere that will let you in when you land.
