Kutaisi to Mestia and Ushguli: what the road really asks for

This is the drive people rent a Subaru for, and the one where the advice actually matters. Kutaisi to Mestia takes four to five hours. The first half is easy motorway along the Enguri; the second climbs steadily into the mountains on a paved road that is in far better condition than its reputation suggests. In summer, in good weather, a normal car makes it to Mestia without difficulty. This surprises people who were told they needed a 4x4 for the whole route. Where that changes is Ushguli. The forty-odd kilometres beyond Mestia are rough — gravel, river crossings in places, and steep sections that punish low clearance. This is the stretch that genuinely needs four-wheel drive and decent ground clearance, and it takes about two hours each way despite the short distance. Do not attempt it in a Yaris. If you have booked a small car and still want to see Ushguli, leave it in Mestia and take a shared jeep. Weather is the other variable. The road to Mestia can close in winter storms, and the Ushguli track is often impassable from late autumn to spring. Check locally on the day rather than trusting a forecast from Kutaisi. Practical notes: fill the tank in Zugdidi, because stations thin out after that. Take cash — card acceptance in Svaneti is patchy. Allow more time than the map says, not because the road is bad but because you will stop constantly. The Enguri reservoir alone is worth twenty minutes.
