SUV and 4x4 rental in Kutaisi
Some roads out of Kutaisi ask for four-wheel drive and some do not. Ushguli, upper Racha and the tracks above Okatse are the first kind. Batumi and Tbilisi are the second. All five-seaters, all automatic. The Honda HRV is the one SUV-shaped car in the fleet that is front-wheel drive — good for the city, not for Ushguli.
Where you actually need one
Mestia is reachable on asphalt in good weather; Ushguli beyond it is not, and the last stretch is the reason people rent a Forester. Racha, the upper Okatse tracks and mountain villages after rain are the other honest cases. In winter, four-wheel drive stops being a preference on any mountain route.
